This work is a dedication to Corduroy by Don Freeman, the book published in 1968—the same year Trina was born. As a child, it was my absolute favorite story, not only because of Corduroy’s search for Friendship, but also the little girl who wants Corduroy the bear, looked like her. Seeing a little Black girl at the heart of a story definitely connected with me. Corduroy’s missing button always made her think of her mother, who also sewed and would have known just how to mend his overalls. At its core, the story is about friendship, care, and being seen. Being an only child, this resonated with her.
